As the weather warms up and the days are longer, many couples opt for a more casual approach to their wedding and request their Ceremony to be done outside in their backyard or one that may be special to them. Casual backyard weddings are charming and memorable; however, you need to have a contingency plan should bad weather be in the forecast.

Here are some tips on how to plan and dress for a casual backyard wedding:

1. Alternate location

In the house or under a tent

Ensure that the home where the ceremony is can accommodate your guests should it rain or ensure you have a tent set up to allow for cover. This is also a good idea should it be a hot sunny day. Chairs are optional as the ceremonies are not usually long in length therefore guests are comfortable standing

2. Create a lovely atmosphere

  • Simple flowers or plants around the ceremony area are a nice touch.
  • Seating is optional depending on the length of the ceremony; however, keep in mind that if you have elderly guests, they may need to sit regardless.
  • Fairy lights, candles or lanterns are lovely should the ceremony be later in the day or evening. If it is dark, appropriate lighting is needed for safety.
  • Food or snacks: Buffet style or a food truck provide your guests with substance unless you are planning an alternate location (restaurant) for eating.
  • Drinks: A water station or juice bar is great to help keep your guests hydrated, or if they are having alcoholic drinks, a self-serve station helps.
  • Music: The iPhone is all you need, but ensure you create a playlist and have a small speaker available.
  • Restrooms: Ensure your guests have the availability of restrooms either in the house or a rented potty if possible.

3.  Dress Tips:

  • Bride and Groom: - Wear whatever makes you comfortable. Usually, in backyards, the vibe is casual and non-fussy (remember there will be lots of pictures taken, so make sure you feel your best)
  • Ensure you advise your guests if there is a theme (beachy, Hawaiian, western) or that fact that it is casual.
  • Advise your female guests to wear flats or wedges, not to aerate the grass.
  • Remember, it could be a very hot day, so linens, sundresses for the ladies and golf shirts, and casual pants for the men as comfort is the key.

4.  Legality of Backyard Weddings:

  • Backyard weddings are legal as long as you follow local regulations, obtain the necessary permits and have a licensed wedding officiant to perform the ceremony and sign the Marriage License
  • Check with your local government or municipality to ensure compliance with zoning laws, noise restrictions, and other requirements.
  • Some areas may have restrictions on the number of guests or the type of activities allowed in residential neighborhoods.
  • Make sure if you have neighbors close by, make sure they are aware of your plans.

Remember, the charm of a backyard wedding lies in its simplicity and personal touch creating beautiful memories for yourselves along with your guests.
