This past August, I had the pleasure of officiating a wedding in Ayton, Ontario. The service was held in a refurbished barn with a custom-built wedding arbour and podium. The ceremony had everything—tributes, a touching naming announcement by the bride, a Celtic wedding knot ceremony, an Irish whiskey toast, and custom-written vows, all held together with humour and colourful language.
The wedding reception took place in a spacious tent just down from the barn, featuring beautiful homemade decorations and centrepieces, a large stage for the local band to perform, a full buffet, and meaningful speeches. The highlight of the reception was a mechanical bull, which entertained the kids and even a few brave guests who gave it a try, wedding attire and all.
No detail was spared, and the bride, groom, and all guests had a wonderful time!
Planning a Rural Wedding Ceremony and Reception
Rural weddings can offer a unique and charming experience. Here are five crucial considerations to ensure your ceremony and reception run smoothly in a country setting:
Logistics and Accessibility
Parking: Designate a field or open space for parking if needed. Signage: Provide clear, visible signs to guide guests and vendors along rural roads and onto your property, ensuring everyone arrives safely and on time.
Weather Preparedness
Backup plan: Always have a Plan B for rain, excessive heat, cold, or wind. Consider the season and potential weather conditions. Food choices: Extreme weather can affect food and beverages; for hot weather, avoid items with frosting or ingredients that melt easily.
Guest Comfort and Amenities
Restroom facilities: Many rural sites lack permanent restrooms, so renting porta-potties may be necessary. Appropriate footwear: Inform guests about terrain—grass, gravel, or dirt—and advise suitable shoes. Bug control: Protect guests from mosquitoes and other pests to maintain comfort.
Vendor and Supplier Coordination
Travel time and fees: Vendors may charge additional fees to service rural locations. Catering capabilities: Ensure your caterer is experienced with outdoor and rural venues. Timeline management: Prepare a detailed schedule for all vendors and share it well in advance.
Utilities and Infrastructure
Power source: Rural venues may have limited electricity, requiring a generator. Sound amplification: Outdoor spaces may make it difficult for guests at the back to hear the ceremony. Cell service and Wi-Fi: Remote areas can have spotty cell coverage and no Wi-Fi, so plan accordingly.
Creating a Rural Wedding Celebration
Hosting a large, formal wedding in a rural area can create one of the most special and memorable days of your life. With careful planning and attention to these details, your countryside wedding can be both beautiful and stress-free.
