You may have woken up this morning and decided it was time to take your relationship to the next level. Perhaps your original plans fell through, or you have cultural reasons. Or, you might be planning a destination wedding and want to make it official before you leave. Whatever the reason, same-week marriage ceremonies in Mississauga are completely doable.
However, it’s not as simple as just showing up. There are specific rules and regulations you have to follow.
In this post, I’ll walk you through the 5 most important things you need to understand to make your day happen smoothly and stress-free.
Same Week Marriage Ceremonies in Mississauga: What’s Possible and What’s Not
1. Same Week Licensing is Possible, but it is appointment-driven!
First, let us tackle the paperwork. You can’t get married in Ontario without a marriage license. The good news is that you can get this license and hold your ceremony on the same day.
You must apply for your marriage license in person at the City Clerk’s Office at Mississauga Civic Centre. You can’t do this online or over the phone because you must sign the application in front of a clerk.
While the clerk’s office is often accommodating, they do get busy. If you have a specific date in mind, I strongly recommend booking your license appointment online first. You can often get the license printed in about 30 minutes once you are there.
2. City Hall Offers Civil Ceremonies
Once you have your license, you need someone to marry you. The most obvious place to look is City Hall. The City of Mississauga offers civil ceremonies, which are non-religious and legal.
Keep in mind that civil ceremonies are generally available Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 4 pm. They usually require a consultation at least three days before the ceremony. This rule exists so the city staff can prepare the paperwork and confirm all your details are correct.
3. Private Officiants are the Key to Same-Week Wedding Ceremonies
So, what happens if City Hall is booked for the day, or if the three-day consultation window doesn't work for you? This is where a private marriage officiant becomes your alternative option.
As a licensed wedding officiant, I can tell you that we offer the key to true flexibility for same-week marriage ceremonies.
4. Legal Requirements: What You Must Bring
You can’t get married without the correct documents. Here is exactly what you need to bring for your same-week marriage ceremony:
- Your valid Ontario Marriage License. You get this from the City Clerk’s office first.
- Two pieces of government-issued ID. One of these pieces must include your photo. Your driver’s license/passport and birth certificate are perfect examples.
- Two witnesses. These can be anyone you know who is at least 16 years old. They just need to watch you sign the papers.
- Divorced. If either of you is divorced, you must provide additional legal documentation proving the divorce is valid in Ontario. Unfortunately, you cannot process this extra paperwork in the same week - this document requires review and a longer time frame.
5. Restrictions: What You Cannot Do
There are restrictions for same-week weddings, especially if you marry at City Hall.
- You cannot bring alcohol or throw confetti/rice.
- You cannot bring in large, elaborate decorations because the space is for a simple, dignified ceremony.
- There’s no such thing as a proxy marriage in Ontario. Both of you must be physically present in the same room.
- Also, you don’t leave with your official marriage certificate. After the ceremony, your officiant signs the license and sends it to the provincial government.
You must then wait 12 to 16 weeks after the ceremony before you can apply for your official marriage certificate online. Legally married immediately, but the piece of paper you frame comes later.

Planning a wedding on short notice in Mississauga is possible. You just need to book your license appointment, get a private officiant, bring your ID, and know what to expect. If you follow these five points, you can have a beautiful and legal wedding without the long wait.
