This past February, I had the honour of conducting a Ceremony for a Couple in Mississauga. The original request was for a Simple Wedding where the Ceremony only lasts about 10 minutes (including the signing of the documents) and requires two witnesses. The couple told me that the ceremony was to take place at the Groom’s Parents home in Port Credit. It would precede a more formal church ceremony in the Bride's home country of Croatia.
When I arrived at the home, to my pleasant surprise, the house was decorated for the Ceremony with faux flowers, white tablecloths, lit candles and a large table with glasses and Champagne. What was most impressive was the number of Family Members in attendance, a total of 15, including the Groom’s Grandparents. The couple requested the inclusion of a wonderful song, “At Last,” to begin the ceremony. This created a warm, interactive ceremony that was enjoyed by all. The song “At Last” was chosen by the Bride and performed by Etta James, who was popular in the sixties, and who was introduced to her by the Groom some years before.
To further add to the family spirit, after the ceremony a celebratory drink and wedding cake were served. I was graciously asked to stay, where the family including the Groom’s Mother and Father were very welcoming. Having included many important family members in this special day made it all the more memorable.
6 Things to Include in a Simple Family Wedding Ceremony
- Personal Vows: Custom-written vows can make the ceremony deeply personal and meaningful. They do not have to be long—just heartfelt.
- Close-knit Guest List: By keeping the guest list small, you ensure that only the most important people in your life are present, making the celebration intimate and special.
- Personal Touches: Incorporate elements that reflect your personalities and shared interests. This could be in the form of unique decorations, special readings, or even a themed dress code.
- Meaningful Music: Choose songs that are meaningful to your relationship. It sets the tone for the ceremony and adds an emotional layer to the event.
- A space that can accommodate your guests comfortably. This could include your parents' living room, spacious basement or backyard. If you choose the backyard please assure you have a covered area in case of rain or inclement weather.
- An Officiant you connect with: Having an officiant who understands your journey and relationship can make the ceremony more authentic and memorable.
Creating a simple and heartfelt Family Wedding Ceremony can be one of the most special and memorable days of your life. If you have any other questions or need more ideas, feel free to ask!
