Civil weddings are often viewed as quick, transactional ceremonies. Typically, the couple and their witnesses sign two documents—the Marriage Licence and the Marriage Register—and formally state their intent to marry. These ceremonies usually last about ten to fifteen minutes and focus primarily on legal requirements.
However, a recent civil wedding I had the honour of officiating proved that a civil ceremony can be so much more than just paperwork. This particular celebration elevated the traditional civil wedding into something deeply personal and memorable.
The ceremony took place in the couple’s condominium in Mississauga, creating an intimate and welcoming atmosphere that set the tone for a truly special experience.
A Civil Wedding Ceremony That Exceeded Expectations
As I entered the "condo", I was warmly greeted by the groom. The kitchen and living room were filled with family and friends enjoying wonderful food, sharing laughter, and raising glasses in celebration.
Guests began asking about my background, and I was happy to return the courtesy. We quickly discovered that the groom’s family was from the Maritimes—just like me. That shared connection immediately created a sense of familiarity and warmth.
After about ten to fifteen minutes of conversation and connection, we transitioned seamlessly into the ceremony itself.
The Power of Music and Storytelling
The ceremony opened with a beautiful song by Nicholas Britell titled Agape. The word “agape” comes from the Bible and represents selfless, unconditional love—a perfect reflection of the commitment being made.
As the ceremony continued, meaningful portions of the couple’s love story were shared. Guests were invited to participate, adding warmth and spontaneity to the moment.
One guest even assisted with the Declaration of Marriage at the conclusion of the ceremony, creating a moment that was both heartfelt and unforgettable.
A Unique Approach to Celebrating Love
The following weekend, the couple hosted a more formal wedding celebration at a hall in Mississauga. For that ceremony, a close friend acted as the officiant.
This thoughtful approach gave the couple two distinct and meaningful ceremonies—one intimate and legally binding, and the other celebratory and ceremonial.
5 Things to Consider When Having a Civil Ceremony in Mississauga
1. Marriage Licence and Legal Requirements
Before your ceremony, you must obtain a valid Ontario Marriage Licence from the City of Mississauga. The ceremony requires the couple, a licensed officiant, and two witnesses who fully understand the commitment being made.
2. City Hall Rules and Restrictions
If you choose Mississauga City Hall, be aware that alcohol, confetti, bubbles, and outside decorations are not permitted. The city provides a clean, elegant setting, allowing your vows and connection to take center stage.
3. Officiant and Venue Booking
You can book your civil ceremony through the City Clerk’s office or with a licensed wedding officiant. Be sure to confirm availability, fees, and any booking requirements well in advance.
4. Personalization with Vows and Rings
Even a simple civil ceremony can be meaningful. Couples are welcome to exchange rings and share personal vows. Let your officiant know ahead of time if you’d like to include readings or cultural traditions.
5. Documentation and Timing
Have your marriage licence and identification ready on the day of the ceremony. Remember that Ontario marriage licences are valid for ninety days, ceremonies must take place in Ontario, and proxy marriages are not permitted.
Bonus Tip
A civil ceremony is a quick, convenient, and budget-friendly option. It’s ideal for couples who want to be legally married before hosting a larger celebration or for those who prefer a simple, intimate experience.
