Over this past summer, I had the honour of conducting a ceremony for a couple in Mississauga. The original request was for a simple wedding where the ceremony would last about 10 minutes (including the signing of the documents) and required two witnesses. The couple told me that the ceremony was to take place in their backyard. This ceremony would precede a more formal celebration in Italy in the next two years.
When I arrived at the home, to my pleasant surprise, the backyard was beautifully decorated, and the dining table was perfectly set. To further add to the joyful spirit, the Bride and Groom's immediate family were present and dressed up for the occasion, including the cutest Ring Bearer ever — the couple's 2-year-old son. The ceremony featured a group response of “We Will” when asked if they would continue to bless the couple on their love journey. The signing of the documents featured the KC and the Sunshine Band song, Ain’t Nothin’ Wrong, released in 1975, which only added to the cool and lively vibe.
After the ceremony, a celebratory drink and wedding cake were served, and I was graciously asked to join in. Having included many important family members in this special day made it all the more memorable.
Turning a Backyard Wedding into a Family Celebration
Backyard weddings can be an excellent way to start your married life together. Here are a few key points to consider when organizing your own backyard wedding:
Wedding License and Documentation
You will still need to ensure that you obtain your wedding license and provide a copy to your wedding officiant prior to the ceremony. The officiant will handle sending the signed license to the Registrar’s Office once the ceremony is complete.
Location and Guest Count
A backyard wedding can be both intimate and elegant, especially with family in attendance. Consider the size of your backyard and how many guests it can comfortably accommodate. Do you need chairs for your attendees, or will they stand for the ceremony? A well-thought-out setup ensures comfort and flow for everyone.
Back-Up Plan
Have a backup plan in case of rain or unexpected weather. Prepare an area in your home that can comfortably accommodate the ceremony, signing, and guests. A little preparation can go a long way in ensuring your day runs smoothly, no matter the conditions.
Ceremony Style
You can choose a simple civil ceremony for a casual wedding, or you can include personal, religious, or spiritual elements to make it uniquely yours. All of these details should be discussed with your wedding officiant to customize the ceremony to your exact vision and preferences.
Creating a Family Celebration
Creating a simple and heartfelt family wedding ceremony can be one of the most special and memorable days of your life. Whether it’s an intimate gathering or a small celebration surrounded by loved ones, your backyard can become the perfect setting for a meaningful beginning.
