Most recently, I had the privilege of performing a Civil Ceremony for a couple who were having a Destination Wedding in the Dominican Republic. The couple wanted to assure that when they had their public wedding in the DR that they would in fact be legally married in Canada.
The couple planned the Civil Ceremony on a Friday Evening, two weeks ahead of their public wedding. The Civil Ceremony was held at their home in Oakville. The couple had the Bride’s Sister and brother-in-law act as the witnesses. The Bride and Groom took the opportunity to dress up a little for the ceremony; the Bride in white and the Groom in a jacket. They further added a wonderful cover version of Simply The Best by Sydney to act as the opening song and during the signing of the wedding document at the end of the ceremony. The Ceremony featured a reading of the Apostle Paul’s Love Letter to the Corinthians. Simple yet elegant, intimate and meaningful.
The service was concluded with a glass of champagne, then a wonderful, relaxed social time.
For the Destination Wedding, the couple launched a Wedding Website powered by Zola to capture the necessary information for guests to plan and get to the Dominican Republic. From all reports, the destination public wedding was also a wonderful celebration and good times were had by all.
Planning a destination wedding is exciting, but it comes with unique challenges! Here are eight key elements to consider:
- Location & Accessibility: Choose a destination that suits your vision but is also convenient and affordable for guests to travel to.
- Budget & Costs: Factor in travel expenses, accommodations, and local vendor pricing to ensure your wedding stays within budget.
- Legal Requirements: Different countries have different marriage laws, so research residency requirements, paperwork, and officiant regulations. For the province of Ontario, it is recommended that you have at least a Civil Ceremony prior to your Destination Wedding.
- Weather & Seasonality: Consider the climate and peak tourist seasons to avoid crowds and unexpected weather issues or inflated costs.
- Guest Experience: Plan activities, accommodations, and transportation to make the trip enjoyable for your guests.
- Local Vendors & Planning Support: Hiring a local wedding planner and experienced vendors can help navigate logistics and cultural differences.
- Travel & Logistics: Ensure guests have passports, visas (if needed), and clear travel itineraries to make their journey smooth.
- Wedding Website: Captures all of the key information of the wedding. Note, you can usually launch a site for little or no cost
A destination wedding can be magical, but careful planning is key! If you have any other questions or need more ideas, feel free to ask!
